Hari OM! Spring is most definitely springing here at Yoga Torquay! Its been a while since our last blog, so lots of exciting news to catch up on. Alice and I have been busily working away behind the scenes through the winter and spring - making many improvements to the studio, including stocking up with a whole new range of equipment. We have also put together an incredible schedule of workshops over the coming summer months.

We now have a full complement of yoga props including foam blocks, bamboo bricks and bespoke meditation cushions. Alice has also hand made some beautiful eye pillows for relaxation. Now that we have all the equipment you could possibly need : we are running a weekly restorative yoga class taught by Alice on Fridays 6:15 - 7:30pm. Restorative Yoga is a restful 'yin' style of yoga practice in which postures are held for longer periods of time using the support of a range of props such as bolsters and cushions. In this way the body is stretched but the muscles relaxed, taking the effects of each posture to a profound level.

We've had lots enquires from people new to yoga, unsure where to start: so we are now offering a weekly beginners' yoga class on Thursdays 6:30 - 8pm. This class really does what it says on the tin and is suitable for anyone new to yoga, or perhaps someone who used to practice a while ago and is getting back into it again. The class is gentle and focuses on learning key postural and breathing techniques from the ground up.

We're thrilled to welcome Nora Nelson to the Yoga Torquay team. Nora is running regular monthly 'Sadhana on Sunday' workshops in the tradition of Vinyasa Krama yoga. She will also be teaching regular 'Yoga for Birth' workshops over the summer months.

On the subject of workshops, I'm really excited to be welcoming some outstanding guest yoga teachers to the studio this summer and truly giving local yogis a rare opportunity to train with some of the most inspiring and experienced teachers around.

On the 8th June, Lucy Crisfield will be visiting the studio to teach special all day workshop on Sanskrit. Lucy is one of the very few teachers in the UK who is able to teach this subject with the authority of a linguist and understanding of a yoga practitioner.

  • On the 22nd June, we will be joined by Duncan Hulin who will be teaching his summer solstice workshop at the studio. Duncan has been one of the most influential and inspiring teachers in Devon for the past 35+ years. He is the founder of the Devon School of Yoga and has been training yoga teachers for over 30 years. His workshops combine his extensive knowledge of kriya, asana, pranayama, meditation and the philosophy of yoga.

  • On 7th July Isabelle Luterbacher will be teaching a whole day of Iyengar Yoga - a precision alignment-based yoga method founded by the influencial yoga teacher BKS Iyengar. This is a workshop for those with some yoga experience who would like to deepen their practice and understanding of Iyengar yoga. Isabelle has been teaching yoga for 16 years and is one of the few authorised Iyengar teachers in the area.

  • On the 13th &14th July we will be welcoming a very special guest to the studio all the way from Mysore, India. Sri Vijay Gopala will be teaching a whole weekend of workshops on a range of subjects. Vijay in recent years has become a regular guest teacher at the World Yoga Festival in Reading. He comes from a traditional yoga lineage and studied yoga from a young age under the tutelage of his father. Vijay's approach is grounded in the rich philosophical yoga traditions of India and his teachings bridge the gap between philosophy and practical techniques on the mat.

  • Then on 20th September we have another special guest to the studio - this time from California - the legendary Doug Swenson. Doug was one of the original pioneers of Vinyasa yoga in the USA and has been practising yoga for over 50 years. His workshops are dynamic and challenging but relaxed and filled with laughter and good humour. Doug will be teaching a special one off workshop on the evening of Friday 20th September, entitled 'Mastering the Secrets of Yoga Flow.

We will be running classes right through the summer. We've just got a new app and card reader - so Alice and I can now take card payments at the studio - so don't worry if you don't have any cash handy. We're also working on a new online booking system for those who'd like to book onto a class in advance. If you'd like to receive regular updates on the latest news and events at the studio then please follow us on Facebook and/or sign-up for our free newsletter.

Alice and I look forward to seeing you soon. Have a great summer and Hari OM James & Alice x
